The Advocacy Training Council (ATC) is the only standing pan-Bar committee, pursuing and promoting excellence in advocacy by providing advice, support and encouragement to the four Inns of Court, the Circuits and the Specialist Bar Associations. Set up in 2004 in response to a report issued by a Working Party led by Timothy Dutton QC, it monitors and enhances advocacy training provision by overseeing the training and grading of advocacy teachers, and works closely alongside the Inns and Circuits to monitor and improve their advocacy training.
It has a firm reputation as an important consultative committee, and an expert body on matters relating to advocacy from the vocational stage through to advanced advocacy training for experienced practitioners.
The ATC also has an international reputation as an advisory body assisting the Bar overseas – including the developing world – with improving standards of advocacy in overseas jurisdictions.
